On Tuesday, the Colorado State University Sport Management Club kicked off its first-ever official meeting. The six officers include President, Lauren Phillips; Vice President, Micah DiMatteo; Treasurer, Max Ebert; Secretary, Madison Thorpe; and Marketing Directors, Shelby Paugh and Chris Altenborg.
Professor Taylor Sawyers, the head of the Sport Management department, serves as the advisor for the club, though she emphasizes that the elected student leaders spearhead most, if not all, the activities, meetings, and volunteer opportunities throughout the semester.
The Sport Management Club is brand-new at the university and aims to provide members with networking and volunteer opportunities within sport.
With sport constantly evolving, students often find themselves in highly competitive environments with little to no prior experience in that field, making it nearly impossible to find an internship or job opportunity that suits them.
The Sport Management Club plans to reduce this phenomenon by serving as a connection between students and the real world.
While the club cannot guarantee a career opportunity, it makes it easier for potential employees to network with people in the sport world and gain experience within it.
By networking with potential employers and fellow students, members of the club formulate a solid support system and connections that can help them down the road.
Memberships cost $5.00 per semester, a small price to pay for a myriad of beneficial relationships and pertinent experience working in sport.
Despite the club's novelty, future opportunities look optimistic and limitless for members and founders alike.
